23 Years Since The 2001 September 11 Attacks

Today marks 23 years since the September 11 attacks, a day of remembrance with ceremonies across the U.S.

In New York City, families will gather at the 9/11 Memorial Plaza to read the names of nearly 3,000 victims, followed by the Tribute in Light ceremony.

The attacks were the deadliest terrorist event in U.S. history, killing 2,977 people—2,606 at the World Trade Center, 246 on hijacked planes, and 125 at the Pentagon—with around 40% of the victims' remains still unidentified.

The attacks led to long wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, costing over $3 trillion and with future debt projected to reach $6.5 trillion by 2050. Today serves as a reminder to honor those lost and to come together as a community.

The 90-minute showdown, moderated by David Muir and Linsey Davis, was a high-energy exchange, with Trump poking fun at Harris's policy shifts and Harris firing back at Trump's legal troubles.

Sports, Entertainment & Cultu

Sean “Diddy” Combs Sexual Assault Case: A Michigan judge has slapped Sean "P. Diddy" Combs with a $100 million default judgment after he failed to show up in court to contest allegations that he drugged and sexually assaulted a man in 1997. Derrick Lee Cardello-Smith, currently in prison, claims the incident occurred at a Detroit afterparty where Combs allegedly handed him a drink, causing him to pass out and later wake up to find Combs with a woman and making disturbing comments. Combs' lawyer has dismissed the claims as fraudulent and has promised to fight the judgment, amid other recent sexual assault accusations and a demand from NYC Mayor Eric Adams for Combs to return a key to the city.

Dave Grohl’s New Baby: In a surprising twist, Foo Fighters' Dave Grohl revealed on Instagram that he’s just welcomed a new baby daughter outside of his 21-year marriage, vowing to be a devoted dad. Meanwhile, the band rocked their largest-ever crowd in Denver this August, celebrating their 11th album and marking three decades of Foo Fighters' epic performances.

SpaceX: SpaceX’s Polaris Dawn mission successfully launched from NASA's Kennedy Space Center, aiming to take its civilian crew 870 miles above Earth, surpassing the height of the International Space Station and approaching the heights reached by Apollo missions. This mission, the first of the Polaris Program, will see the crew attempt the first-ever civilian spacewalk and test new technologies over the next five days, paving the way for future space exploration.

Apple’s ‘Glowtime’ Event Takeaways: Apple just shook things up with a slew of updates, spotlighting their long awaited Apple Intelligence AI, which is finally catching up with rivals like Samsung’s Galaxy AI and Google’s Gemini. At their latest event, Apple unveiled AI-powered features that promise to revolutionize your Apple devices: from writing tools that tweak your text and generate summaries, to custom emoji creation based on your wildest prompts, and Siri upgrades that make her more intuitive and useful than ever. Plus, Apple’s made sure to address privacy concerns with on-device processing and a secure Private Cloud Compute system. Expect to start exploring these AI enhancements this fall when iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia hit the scene.

The Kremlin Just Dished out $646 Million: Since the Ukraine conflict began, Russia's crackdown on internet freedom has led to a surge in VPN usage as citizens find clever ways to dodge the Kremlin’s censorship. Now, in a bid to choke off this digital rebellion, the Russian government is pouring a staggering $646 million into beefing up their internet filters and blocking VPNs, with Roskomnadzor even teaming up with China for extra tactics. As VPNs get harder to access, Russians might have to rely on underground networks and word-of-mouth to stay informed, while US tech giants discuss ways to support internet freedom from afar.

Business & Markets

Ford’s Creepy and Intrusive Patent: Ford has just dropped a bombshell that might make you want to steer clear of their cars: they've patented a system that could eavesdrop on your conversations and serve you ads based on what you say. Dubbed the “In-Vehicle Advertisement Presentation System,” this tech aims to turn your car into a high-tech surveillance hub, tracking your talks, location, speed, and even traffic conditions to deliver those oh-so-relevant ads. Ford insists this doesn’t mean they’ll use it, but if you’re thinking this sounds like a privacy nightmare, you’re not alone.

The Wednesday Watchdog: In August, household budgets might have caught a break as forecasts suggest a dip in inflation, with prices for essentials like food and gas holding steady or falling. The upcoming Consumer Price Index (CPI) report is expected to show a 2.6% annual rise in prices, down from 2.9% in July, thanks to stable food costs and cheaper gas, which could signal a fresh low in inflation since March 2021. If this trend continues, the Federal Reserve might seize the opportunity to cut interest rates, potentially giving the economy and job market a boost, though it could also ease some of the pressure on inflation.

The Bullish Stocks After The ‘Glowtime’ Event: Apple’s new AI-powered iPhone 16 has analysts excited for an upgrade surge, though a slow rollout of AI features might delay immediate sales. Most experts have a "buy" rating, with health upgrades in the new Apple Watch and AirPods potentially boosting future iPhone sales. Apple shares stayed steady around $220.49, up 14% this year.
