Hundreds of Taco Bell Locations will Have AI Drive Through Ordering by the End of 2024
Yum Brands plans to implement artificial intelligence for taking drive-thru orders at hundreds of Taco Bell locations by the end of the year, aiming to expand globally.
This move follows similar initiatives by competitors like Wendy’s and White Castle but is the most ambitious in scope.
The technology is intended to speed up service, cut labor costs, and increase sales through upselling, although its effectiveness is still being tested.
Taco Bell has already expanded its AI pilot from five to over 100 locations, with further expansion anticipated.

CrowdStrike Mishap Cost Delta Airlines Half a Billion
Delta Air Lines CEO Ed Bastian announced that the recent IT outage, which stranded thousands of customers, will cost the company $500 million, covering lost revenue and expenses for compensation and hotels.
The outage led to the cancellation of over 5,000 flights due to a failed CrowdStrike software update, forcing Delta to manually reset 40,000 servers and causing significant operational disruptions.
This incident highlighted the vulnerability of airlines to technology failures, with Delta facing an investigation by the U.S. Department of Transportation and planning to seek damages from CrowdStrike and Microsoft.
Bastian emphasized the need for stringent testing of technology by partners, noting the severe impact on Delta's brand and reputation.

July’s Crazy Effect on the Market
In July, the stock market experienced a major shift as tech stocks that had driven gains earlier in the year stumbled, while small-cap stocks surged.
Only two of the S&P 500's eleven sectors, Communication Services and Information Technology, posted declines, with Real Estate and Financials leading gains.
Rate-sensitive stocks received a boost from unexpected declines in consumer prices, fueling speculation that the Federal Reserve might cut interest rates, leading to a significant rally in small-caps.
Meanwhile, investors moved away from cash-rich big tech companies, with the Magnificent Seven falling 2.7%, while regional banks and homebuilder stocks saw substantial gains.

What to Expect in August
A key question for the markets is whether the shift from tech to small-cap stocks will persist.
Some analysts, like Bank of America's Stephen Suttmeier, believe it will, citing the Russell 2000's recent rally, increased trading volume, and more stocks trading above their 200-day moving averages.
Positive economic indicators, such as a strong second-quarter GDP and steady capital expenditures, suggest the economy is stable but not overheated, which could further support small caps.
However, Quincy Krosby of LPL Financial warns that small caps are volatile and could sell off quickly amidst economic and political uncertainties.
