Zuckerberg’s Advice is Worth (Potentially) Millions
When Sophie Novati started as an engineering intern at Facebook in 2011, the company was in its "move fast and break things" phase, with a culture that felt more like a college dorm than a tech giant.
After leaving Facebook, Novati joined Nextdoor as one of its first iOS engineers before founding Formation in 2019, a job placement firm that has since helped over 1,300 engineers secure significant pay raises. Inspired by her time as Facebook's inclusivity lead, she founded Formation to break down barriers in the tech industry.
A late-night chess game with Mark Zuckerberg left a lasting impression on her, emphasizing the importance of creating value first and worrying about monetization later—a principle that now guides her approach at Formation.
Futuristic Tesla Diner
Elon Musk's vision for a 24-hour Tesla diner and drive-in theater in Hollywood is finally coming to life, with recent photos revealing a sleek, two-story metallic building on the site. Initially teased by Musk in 2018, the project will feature a Supercharging station with 28 stalls and two movie screens showing short films, creating an immersive experience for Tesla drivers while their vehicles charge.
The concept, blending nostalgia with futurism, harkens back to "old school drive-ins" with a modern twist, aiming to turn Tesla charging stations into unique entertainment destinations.
As immersive experiences gain popularity post-pandemic, Musk's venture into this space reflects a broader trend, with companies like Disney and Netflix also exploring ways to engage consumers beyond the screen.
Warren Buffett’s 12 Life Decisions for Success
Warren Buffett is famous for making money and giving advice. In his letter to shareholders, he mentioned that his success came from "about a dozen truly good decisions," one every five years.
Here are 12 key decisions from Buffett’s life that can lead to success:
Be Curious: Start early, like Buffett did by reading about making money and visiting the stock exchange.
Get Started: Experiment and act on your ideas, as Buffett did with his early businesses.
Find Mentors: Learn from experienced people, like Buffett learned from Benjamin Graham.
Be Bold: Take risks, such as Buffett did when he visited GEICO and ended up buying it.
Stay Healthy: Take care of your body and mind, even if Buffett’s habits seem unconventional.
Nurture Relationships: Build strong partnerships, as Buffett did with Charlie Munger.
Plan for the Future: Prepare for what comes next, like Buffett did with his succession plan.
Cut Losses: Know when to exit unproductive ventures, as Buffett did with the textile business.
Laugh Often: Enjoy life and use humor, as Buffett does in his communications.
Teach Others: Share your knowledge, as Buffett does with his advice and lessons.
Do Nothing When Necessary: Wait for the right opportunity rather than forcing action.
Give Back: Follow Buffett’s lead in philanthropy, inspired by Chuck Feeney.

BRICS Kick to the American Dollar but is it a “Swift” one?
The BRICS economic alliance is pushing forward with the creation of its own payment system, designed to bypass the US dollar and offer an alternative to SWIFT for unilateral trade settlements.
This initiative is gaining significant traction, with 159 countries reportedly interested in adopting the system, according to Russia’s Central Bank Governor, Elvira Nabiullina.
Set to potentially launch in October, the system could have far-reaching implications for global markets, especially as the BRICS nations continue their de-dollarization efforts. The upcoming BRICS 2024 Summit will prioritize this new financial infrastructure, marking a significant step in the alliance's strategy to strengthen economic sovereignty.
Hurricane Ernesto’s Trajectory
After causing severe damage and prolonged power outages in Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, Hurricane Ernesto made landfall in Bermuda, bringing similar devastation with 85-mph winds.
As Ernesto moves away from Bermuda, it is expected to weaken over cooler waters, but not before leaving behind significant impacts, including widespread power outages and urban flooding. The storm is on track to impact Atlantic Canada next, with potential landfall in Newfoundland early next week, posing risks of flash flooding and strong winds.
Beyond Canada, Ernesto could bring heavy rain and travel disruptions to the UK later in the week, as meteorologists predict an intense Atlantic hurricane season due to unusually warm ocean temperatures.
Eat the Invasive Species
Carp, initially brought to North America from Asia, have thrived so well that they now pose a significant ecological threat, particularly in the Mississippi River Basin.
Despite billions spent on management, including electric barriers and fishing incentives, carp populations continue to explode. Officials are exploring the idea of rebranding carp as a desirable food source for humans and pets, similar to the successful marketing of Chilean sea bass.
Meanwhile, Kansas officials are fighting against a proposed water transfer from Nebraska that could introduce invasive carp species into their waterways, threatening local ecosystems and recreational activities.

A Teenager’s Amateur Nuclear Reactor
At just 17, Cesare Mencarini has stunned the scientific community by developing a small nuclear fusion reactor as part of his A-Levels, making it the only reactor of its kind built in a school setting.
Recently showcased at the Cambridge Science Festival, Mencarini’s reactor achieved plasma and earned him an A* in his A-Level results. Despite initial skepticism from his college, Mencarini persevered through rigorous risk assessments to complete his 18-month project.
Now aiming for a degree in engineering, he plans to join the University of Bristol’s Interface and Analysis Centre, with expectations of making a significant impact on the energy industry.

Tyreek Hill Sparks Controversy
Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill stirred controversy by challenging Olympic gold medalist Noah Lyles to a sprint after Lyles remarked that Super Bowl winners aren't "world champions."
Hill confidently claimed he would beat Lyles, prompting Lyles to respond, saying he's ready for the challenge if Hill is serious. Lyles, fresh off a gold medal win in the 100m at the Paris Olympics with a career-best time of 9.784 seconds, hinted that Hill might be all talk.
Hill, known as one of the NFL's fastest players, has a personal best of 9.98 seconds in the 100m from 2013.
The New Star Wars Game
With the launch of Star Wars Outlaws just weeks away, Ubisoft has released a new PC gameplay trailer highlighting key features, many powered by NVIDIA technology.
The game showcases RTX Direct Illumination, ray-traced global illumination, and ray-traced reflections, all enhanced by NVIDIA DLSS 3.5 for sharper visuals, as seen in Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty.
Running on the GeForce RTX 4090, the trailer shows the game hitting around 110 FPS in a busy scene, though performance may vary in different areas. Optimized for Intel's 14th Gen processors, Star Wars Outlaws will be available on August 30 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series S|X, with post-launch expansions planned through 2025.
Did Someone Just Say ‘85?
After watching the Cincinnati Bengals vs. Chicago Bears 2024 Preseason Week 2 Game Highlights on the official NFL YouTube channel, a few key moments stood out. Caleb Williams completed 6 of 13 passes, which isn't great, but he still managed to showcase some impressive plays.
If the Chicago Bears' management can address the team's inconsistencies and fix the underlying issues, their regular season games could mirror the promising moments we saw in the preseason—marked by tighter play calling, greater trust among the players, and more scoring opportunities.
Additionally, the defense's strong performance against the Bengals was a highlight, even though it's still just the preseason.

Don’t Use ChatGPT to Write your Resumes, Hindsight, They Already Know
AI is reshaping the job market by boosting the number of applications and pushing hiring managers to scrutinize resumes and cover letters more closely.
A Financial Times report reveals that about half of job seekers use AI tools like ChatGPT to enhance their applications, leading to a surge in submissions per job posting. However, employers are becoming adept at spotting AI-generated content, often identifying it through generic language and specific keywords like "realm" and "delve."
While many companies use AI for filtering candidates, they remain cautious about AI's role in application creation, with some even facing legal issues over its use in hiring processes.
